About Nagarkot — The Sunrise Viewpoint

Nagarkot sits at 2,175m on the rim of the Kathmandu Valley, offering one of the broadest Himalayan panoramas accessible by road. The view encompasses eight mountain ranges including Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Mahalangur (Everest), and Kumbhakarna (Kanchenjunga).

The village is small and peaceful — a handful of hotels, a viewing tower, and surrounding farmland. The real attraction is simply the view, best enjoyed with an overnight stay for sunrise.

Nagarkot is the easiest Himalayan viewpoint in Nepal — just 32 km from Kathmandu, this hilltop village at 2,175m offers panoramic views of the Himalayan range from Dhaulagiri in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east, with Everest visible on clear days.

The main draw is sunrise. Watching the first light hit the snow-capped peaks from your hotel balcony or the viewing tower is a magical experience. The sky cycles through violet, pink, orange, and gold as peak after peak catches the light. On clear days, you can count the peaks of eight Himalayan ranges.

For Indian visitors on a short Nepal trip, Nagarkot is the perfect add-on — an overnight stay that delivers Himalayan views without any trekking. Many hotels have rooftop restaurants where you can sip masala tea while watching the sunrise show. The drive from Kathmandu through terraced farmland and Newari villages is scenic in itself.

Nagarkot is also the starting point for some lovely day hikes — the trek down to Changu Narayan temple (one of the oldest Hindu temples in Nepal) and the walk to Dhulikhel are popular choices that combine mountain views with cultural heritage.
