Pokhara is one of the top paragliding destinations in the world, and it’s not hard to see why. You launch from Sarangkot ridge at 1,500m, soar on thermals with Himalayan peaks filling the horizon, and glide down to a landing zone beside Phewa Lake. The entire experience takes 20-30 minutes in the air, and you don’t need any training — tandem flights with certified pilots handle everything.
The Pokhara Experience
A typical tandem flight starts with a short drive up to Sarangkot. After a brief safety talk, you run a few steps downhill and you’re airborne. Pilots use thermal updrafts to gain altitude — sometimes climbing to 2,500m or higher — before a long, scenic descent over the lake. On clear days, you’ll see Annapurna South, Machapuchare (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu from the air. Most operators include GoPro video and photos.
Beyond Pokhara
Bandipur, a hilltop town between Kathmandu and Pokhara, is emerging as an alternative launch site with quieter skies and beautiful valley views. Some operators also fly near Sirkot in the Annapurna foothills.
Practical Details
Flying season is nearly year-round, but October-April offers the best visibility and most reliable thermals. Summer monsoon (June-August) grounds most flights. Weight limit is typically 100-110kg. No experience, fitness, or courage test required — just a willingness to step off the edge. Cost starts around USD 70-90 for a standard tandem flight.
