Nepal’s rivers drop from the highest mountains on Earth through deep gorges and lush valleys, creating some of the finest white water on the planet. Whether you want a half-day adrenaline hit or a multi-day wilderness expedition, there’s a river and a rapid with your name on it.
Best Rivers
The Trisuli River is Nepal’s most accessible rafting destination — just 3 hours from Kathmandu with Class III rapids perfect for first-timers. The Bhote Koshi packs intense Class IV-V rapids into a short stretch, making it ideal for a weekend thrill. For the serious river runner, the Sun Koshi (8-9 days) is rated among the world’s top 10 river journeys, flowing 270km from the Tibetan border to the Terai plains.
The Kali Gandaki and Seti River offer excellent intermediate runs with spectacular gorge scenery. The Tamur River in eastern Nepal combines Grade IV-V rapids with pristine wilderness — remote, challenging, and deeply rewarding.
What to Expect
Rafting season runs October-November (clear water, moderate flow) and March-May (warmer water, rising levels). Summer monsoon months (June-August) bring high water that’s only suitable for experts on specific rivers. All trips include safety briefings, helmets, life jackets, and trained river guides. Multi-day trips camp on sandy riverbanks under the stars.
No experience needed for Class III rivers. For Class IV-V runs, basic swimming ability and reasonable fitness are required. Minimum age is typically 12-16 depending on the river.
