The Everest Region, officially Solukhumbu District, encompasses the Sagarmatha National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting the world’s highest ecosystem. The park covers 1,148 sq km and includes four peaks above 8,000m: Everest (8,849m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m).
The region is home to the Sherpa people, whose legendary mountaineering skills and warm hospitality define the trekking experience. The trail network is well-established with teahouses every few hours, making independent or guided trekking equally viable.
Lukla airport (2,860m), the gateway to Everest, is a 35-minute scenic flight from Kathmandu — landing on one of the world’s most dramatic runways.
