Overview

Upper Mustang is Nepal’s most exclusive trekking destination — a restricted area that was closed to foreigners until 1992, preserving a Tibetan Buddhist culture more authentic than Tibet itself. This 12-day journey takes you through an otherworldly landscape of red eroded canyons, ancient cave dwellings, and the medieval walled city of Lo Manthang.

The landscapes here look like they belong on another planet — towering wind-carved badlands in shades of red, ochre, and cream, with snow-capped peaks rising behind. The sky caves of Choser, inhabited for 3,000 years, are among the most significant archaeological sites in the Himalayas.

Lo Manthang, the ancient capital, is a walled city of 150 houses, four major monasteries, and a royal palace — all within a medieval fortification that has stood since the 14th century. The Tiji Festival (held in May) is a spectacular three-day celebration of masked dances and Buddhist ceremony.

The $500 restricted area permit keeps visitor numbers low, making this a genuinely exclusive experience. For travelers seeking something beyond the beaten path, Upper Mustang delivers like nowhere else in Nepal.
