One morning at Boudhanath: a photo essay

Pemba Sherpa · May 2026

From the first butter lamp to the breakfast crowds — ninety minutes at the great stupa, in twelve frames.

The kora begins before the light does. By the time the sun clears the eastern rooftops, the great dome has already gathered its first thousand circumambulations — and the morning unfolds in small, repeated rituals that reward anyone willing to stand still.

The lamp-lighter works alone for twenty minutes before anyone else arrives.
Right hands trailing the wheels — the sound is the morning’s metronome.
A grain-seller’s first toss and the whole square lifts off at once.
Monks, grandmothers, runners in down jackets: everyone walks clockwise.
The first chiya glasses appear on the stupa-facing balconies.
The all-seeing eyes catch the sun — the frame everyone comes for, earned.
