About Pokhara — The Gateway to the Annapurnas

Pokhara is Nepal’s adventure capital and its most scenic city, sitting at 827 meters where the subtropical lowlands meet the Himalayan foothills. The three pristine lakes — Phewa, Begnas, and Rupa — reflect the 8,000-meter peaks of the Annapurna massif, creating postcard-perfect views from almost every angle.

The city has grown into a world-class destination for paragliding, ultralight flights, zip-lining, bungee jumping, and some of the best trekking on earth. Yet it retains a laid-back charm that makes it equally perfect for those seeking peace — yoga retreats, meditation centers, and spa resorts dot the lakeside.

For families and first-time Nepal visitors, Pokhara is arguably the best starting point: easy to reach, mild climate, spectacular scenery, and a range of activities from gentle to extreme.

Pokhara is where the Himalayas come down to meet you. This lakeside city, cradled in a lush valley beneath the towering Annapurna range and the perfect fishtail peak of Machapuchare, is Nepal’s most beloved destination — and for good reason.

Phewa Lake mirrors the snow-capped mountains on still mornings, creating a scene so beautiful it hardly seems real. Along its shores, the Lakeside district buzzes with cafes, shops, and restaurants where travelers swap stories of mountain adventures over steaming cups of masala chai.

For Indian visitors, Pokhara offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. You can paraglide over the lake with the Annapurna range as your backdrop, take a sunrise hike to Sarangkot viewpoint, or simply rent a colorful boat and paddle across Phewa Lake to the island temple of Tal Barahi. The International Mountain Museum tells the story of Himalayan mountaineering, while the Devi’s Fall waterfall and Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave offer easy, family-friendly excursions.

Pokhara is also the launching point for Nepal’s most famous treks — the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, Ghorepani Poon Hill, and the new Mardi Himal trail all begin from this valley. After days on the trail, there’s nothing quite like returning to Pokhara for a lakeside massage, fresh fish dinner, and sunset drinks.

From Kathmandu, Pokhara is a scenic 25-minute flight or a winding 6-hour drive through river gorges and terraced hillsides. Either way, the journey is part of the experience.
