Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the four holiest sites in Buddhism. The sacred garden, monastic zone, and archaeological ruins together form a pilgrimage destination that attracts visitors from across the world.
The site is remarkably well-preserved and thoughtfully developed. The Mayadevi Temple houses the exact birthplace marker, while the surrounding gardens include the sacred Pushkarni Pond, the Ashoka Pillar (249 BC), and remnants of ancient monasteries dating back to the 3rd century BC.
Beyond the sacred garden, the International Monastery Zone features over 25 monasteries built by different countries, each in their own architectural tradition — from the golden spires of Myanmar to the zen gardens of Japan.
