Bhaktapur's royal square is the Valley's best-preserved — anchored by the 55-Window Palace and its Golden Gate, called the most precious piece of art in the kingdom.
Unlike its busier siblings, the whole city around it is car-free and lived-in: temple bells, drying grain and children's cricket share the same brick acres the kings once paraded.
