Some ten thousand man-made caves honeycomb Mustang's cliffs — dug two to three millennia ago, by people unknown, for reasons archaeology is still arguing about.
At Chhoser you can climb ladders through a five-storey cave village; elsewhere, caves have yielded 2,500-year-old burials and Buddhist murals. The mystery is the point: nobody knows who began them.
