The most refined of the Valley's three royal squares — a tight constellation of pagodas, courtyards and the stone Krishna Mandir, all carved by Newari masters at the height of their art.
The former palace now houses the Patan Museum, widely judged the finest in South Asia: bronze gods lit like jewels in restored brick rooms. Around the square, metal-casters still work as their ancestors did.
