Six glacial lakes strung between 4,700 and 5,000 metres — the world's highest freshwater system of its kind, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, impossibly turquoise against grey moraine.
Protected as a Ramsar wetland, the lakes host migrating ducks that somehow commute over the Himalaya. The third lake, beside Gokyo village, is the one that ends up on every wall at home.
